Political Leadership and the European Health Union: A way forward for health and well-being
26 January 2021
Online

Overview

Historically, the European Union has had a narrow health mandate. European health and health care needs have been traditionally handled by EU Member States. However, as exemplified by the COVID-19 pandemic and antimicrobial resistance, siloed, national approaches to complex health issues are often ill-equipped to ensure widespread health and well-being.

Great strides in political leadership are required to address this long-standing, structural challenge. Dr. Vyentis Andriukaitis, WHO Special Envoy for the European Region will draw on lessons learned from his extensive political career at national and international levels to discuss possibilities for exercising political leadership for healthier societies.

Dr. Vyentis Andriukaitis will also explore one bold initiative to make health and well-being the core focus of political deliberation in the future--the manifesto for a European Health Union (EHU).

This program is open to Sciana Network Members only.
